How Your Brain’s Response To Seeing Food May Effect Weight Loss
September 17, 2009
Food triggers or cues are not just an excuse to explain away why it is so difficult for some individuals to lose weight and keep it off. This topic has been discussed by many diet experts as a major reason for the difficulty experienced in losing weight. Now, with a report from The Miriam Hospital on brain response and food, there is scientific data to back it up.
In their study, the researchers found that a difference in brain activity patterns may explain why some people are able to maintain a significant weight loss while others regain the weight. During the study, individuals who had kept the weight off for several years were shown pictures of food, as well as obese and normal weight participants.… Continue reading
Ice Cream May Target The Brain Before Your Hips
September 16, 2009
We all love the rich creaminess of ice cream. And yes, if you eat to much, you’re going to have to buy a bigger belt. However, according to researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center, eating ice cream and similar fatty foods can be even more devastating to your waistline that once previously thought.
From their research, findings suggests that fat from certain foods you eat makes its way to your brain, and once there causes your brain to send messages to your body’s cells, warning them to ignore the appetite-suppressing signals from leptin and insulin, hormones that are involved in weight regulation.… Continue reading
Kid’s Emotional Problems And Self-Perceptions Foretell Of Future Weight Gain
September 11, 2009
Growing up can be emotionally difficult for kids. Given the pressure to meet your boss’s deadlines, and other responsibilities that adults face everyday, being popular in school and other socially rewarding aspects of children’s lives may seem inconsequential to adults now, but it is very important to our children. The type of self-esteem they develop today will shape the person that they will become tomorrow.… Continue reading
Late-Night Eating: Worse Than You Think
September 7, 2009
You would think that eating the same amount of calories regardless of the day would not matter. In fact, as long as you do not overeat, you should be able to maintain or lose the weight, right?
Well, as reasonable as this may sound, eating at certain times of the day does matter and it can have a significant effect on your waistline. In a recent study published in Obesity, researchers at Northwestern found that eating at irregular times, that is at night, influences weight gain.… Continue reading
High-fat Foods Shown To Make You Lazy And Dumb
September 6, 2009
High-fat diets have been shown to be detrimental to your health, as they can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. However, there is a prevailing notion among many who exercise vigorously that they can get away with eating these types of foods. As evidence for this, many point to their lean physique.
However, a study by Oxford University researchers has shown that rats fed a high-fat diet show a stark reduction in their physical endurance, and a decline in their cognitive ability after just nine days of eating a high-fat diet.… Continue reading
How Exercise Minimizes Weight Regain After Weight Loss
September 4, 2009
One of the greatest challenges with weight loss comes after you have lost your desired amount of weight. Many diet and health experts focus on how to lose weight, but few put the same amount of effort into teaching you how to keep it off. And given that many diets use extreme measures to get you to lose the weight, it shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise.
One method that has been proven to help keep the weight off is exercise. A study by the University of Colorado Denver reports that exercising helps to prevent weight regain by reducing your appetite, and by burning fat first before burning carbohydrates.
Researchers believe that by burning fat first and storing carbohydrates for use later in the day helps to slow weight regain and may minimize overeating by signaling a feeling of fullness to the brain. This choice of burning fat first was seen only in the group of rats that exercised after their weight loss. The sedentary group first fuel choice was carbohydrates.… Continue reading
