Glycemic Index and the Shrinking Waist
We all know that losing weight can be very hard, however keeping it off can be even harder. The facts are that very few of us can muster up the discipline required to stick to the diet that will allow our waists to shrink a inch or two. And if that wasn’t bad enough, your body’s metabolism slows and hunger increases in response to your attempts to lose any significant amount of weight. But here is a question you may want to ask yourself. Are there any food choices that will help prevent that post diet relapse? Well, there is and it is called the glycemic index.
So what is the glycemic index?
First off, you need to know that all carbohydrates are not created equally. This is where the glycemic index comes into play. The index measures the difference according to a ranking system using a scale from 0 to 100. The purpose of this scale is to describe to a degree which given carbohydrate causes blood sugar levels to increase after eating. Foods that cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly are given a value of 70 and above, and those that break down more slowly in your body and release glucose gradually typically have a value under 55.
Thus GI carbohydrates that have high values tend to rapidly digest more quickly than their lower G.I. counter parts. This causes great fluctuations in blood sugar levels. By eating carbohydrates with a low G.I. rating, you can create in your body a process where the rise in blood sugar and insulin levels only have small fluctuations. Why is this important? Smaller fluctuations of blood sugar levels are believed to result in more sustainable weight loss by helping you to control your appetite, that is they make you feel fuller longer.
So what does this mean to you? If you’re serious about losing weight then you need to take a look at all options. Specifically you should start adding low G.I. foods to all your meals. The more you add the fuller you will feel. And it should go without saying that anything you do to keep those hunger pangs at bay will make your diet a lot easier to manage, thus increasing your chances of losing those unwanted pounds.
