Going Vegetarian Not That Hard
Are you thinking about becoming a vegetarian, but think that the diet is too hard to adopt, then think again. Contrary to what you may be lead to believe, it’s easy for people to switch from a regular meat diet to a vegetarian, and that’s good for the heart.
At least this is the case in a study conducted by the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.
According to the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Neal D. Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, for people battling overweight and heart disease a vegetarian diet can be a life-saving prescription.
In the study the patients show that they were able to transition smoothly to a plant-based diet that allows them to eat to satiety and yet still lose weight. According to Barnard patients were willing to make major changes in their eating patterns because they got major results such as lower cholesterol and reduce hypertension.
The study’s participants included well educated women, obese women who were divided into two groups. One group was given a low-fat vegetarian diet while the other group was given a control diet to eat.
When comparing the two groups, the women who ate the vegetarian diet lost much more weight than the women who ate the controlled diet.
In the study the researchers also found that 89% of the women on the vegetarian diet said they felt mostly or completely satisfied with the diet after 14 weeks. Furthermore 86% said they could adhere to the diet at least most of his time in the near future.
