Exercise

Benefits of High Intensity Training

December 15, 2009

Hardcore physical fitness training has received quite a bit of bad publicity lately. People are spending more and more time learning about how to perform each exercise correctly so as to avoid injury. This is an excellent strategy, but only if it does not shy the athlete away from pushing their body. The fact remains that the only way to promote body composition change is to train hard.

To put it simply, any kind of body movement puts some stress on the body. It doesn’t matter if that exercise is walking, biking, lifting, rock climbing, skiing, basketball, baseball, football, soccer, tennis, or anything else. You get the point. The body is always under constant stress. The key is not to avoid all stress but to build the body in such a way that it benefits from this stress and does not break or wear down. Unfortunately this is easier said than done. It is imperative that you take the time to choose a fitness program that teaches you not only how to exercise correctly and get fast results, but will cater to your specific levels of fitness.

For example, there is absolutely no reason for a beginning individual to follow the same routine as an advanced, over-muscled body builder that is stuck on doing tons of isolation exercises. Following these routines will actually slow the beginner down and teach them incorrect habits for working out. When embarking on a new fitness regiment, many if not the majority of exercises should be compound exercises, or exercises that involve multiple body parts. This will teach the body to work in harmony right from the beginning, as well as burning more calories and providing faster results.

It is a common misconception to believe that the avoidance of intense training is better for the body because it will not be put under such tremendous loads of stress. Our bodies are designed to move in multiple planes of motion, run long distances, climb and so on. High intensity training in any form is one the best preventative body maintenance measures that you can take. Intense training, when done correctly helps to prepare the body for what it was biologically designed to do.

Unfortunately we live in a culture obsessed with safety and this very obsession with wanting to avoid risk at all costs ends up setting us up for higher rates of injury. Balance begins to fail, we lose our elasticity, coordination and strength and thus make injuries all the more common. Avoiding intense exercise weakens the body over time. Muscle steadily decreases as we age, and the only way to prevent this from happening is to use our bodies. Sorry folks, walking is very good for you and is something you should do as much as possible but it is not exercise.
