How Exercising At Home Fights Stress

November 20, 2010
By Mark Warrington

We all have our days when we feel like we’re either about to explode and just feel like yelling at everyone or just breakdown and cry our eyes out until we are left alone. I know I do. This is normally how stress affects us and it shows its ugly head almost everyday with what we have to deal with at work, at school, at home and, well, virtually everywhere else. There’s a lot of ways to deal with stress but one of the best ways to deal with it is by exercising it off our system.

Stress causes our bodies to release cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones are what cause us to act out the way we do when we are too stressed and can be dealt with by simply burning them off. A lot of studies have proven that exercise can reduce stress effectively. Tests done on people with high stress levels such as students and depressed patients resulted with the subjects showing lower stress levels and better moods. Most tests involved walking, running and aerobic exercises.

Simple exercises like walking and running can help you with beating your daily stress. And what better way to do all these than in the comfort of your own home. A treadmill can help you accomplish that. This not only helps with blocking out other stressors but it also allows you to use other media to help you with burning off the stress like putting on some soothing music or lighting an aroma therapy candle or incense. There are some treadmills that offer an inclining plane. Having a treadmill with that feature is definitely an advantage since you burn more and faster when you are climbing. This also helps with improving your stamina. Doing 5 to 10 minutes of walking and running can significantly lower your stress levels and will help you with keeping fit and feeling better. Because that’s what exercise does for you.

Another good thing about doing this at home is that you get some alone time. With lesser distractions, you would be able to do some reflection and find out what causes you stress and if something that stresses you out happens everyday and what you can do about them. Exercise helps you with improving your self esteem so you feel better about yourself and when you feel good, you think good as well. And with virtually no distractions, you can definitely beat out your stressors.

Going to the gym and doing all this is up to you but with the other people there, it could add to your stress. Getting a treadmill and exercising the stress away from home is a better deal since you don’t have to pay any membership fees or getting in line to use and equipment. You get to lower your stress levels, stay fit and improve your self esteem. Talk about accomplishing 3 things at once. Not a bad investment if you ask me.
