An Antioxidant Mix That Clears the Way For Weight Loss and Much More

January 8, 2010

There are many antioxidants found in food we eat every day. Cranberries, blue berries, black berries are among the more common berries that carry antioxidants. In the antioxidant world and in the health world, the more antioxidants the better. While these fruits have antioxidants, most experts believe they do not have enough to make a significant difference with regards to our overall health, the ability to lose weight, and in many studies reduce the risk of getting cancer or developing heart disease.

For these benefits we turn to the world’s super fruits which contain a super amount of antioxidants. These fruits have been consumed by their respective local inhabitants for thousands of years. They have been catching on in the rest of the world over the last 2 years…as you will see, there is almost no reason not to include these super supplements to your diet if you would like to feel better, lose weight, have more energy, and prevent unforeseen illnesses before they happen.

The first on the list of super fruits is The Maqui Berry originating from the Patagonia region in South America. The 2007 USDA ORAC Report shows this Berry to have an ORAC value of 27,600 for every 100 grams as against the popular Acai berry which contains an ORAC level of 16,700. In fact, the nutritive value ranks higher on every level against the Acai berry, except for omega 3s. Omega 3s are not present in the Maqui berries however these berries do contain minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, Vitamins A and C.

Second on the list is the aforementioned Acai Berry, (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) a fruit that grows on the acai palm trees in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil. It is dark violet in color and is approximately the size of a grape. Acai contains several substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids which are powerful antioxidants that help defend the body against life’s stressors. They also are a significant factor in the body’s cell protection system. Free radicals are harmful byproducts produced by the body. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants may interfere with aging and the disease process by neutralizing free radicals. Furthermore, by mitigating the destructive power of free radicals, antioxidants appear to be able to to reduce the risk of diseases like heart disease and cancer.

The Goji Berry pronounced – “go-gee” – are delicate red colored berries, typically found in the Himalayan valleys of China, Mongolia and Tibet, as well as in the Xingjiang and Ningxia provinces of China. The Goji berry has been found to support cardiovascular health in over 65 medical studies. In fact one of the studies proved Goji to be one of the strongest inhibitors of lipid peroxidation (a major factor in heart disease). Several other studies discussed the correlation between inadequate mineral consumption and poor heart health and Goji is rich in cardioprotective minerals. Furthermore, in other studies with laboratory animals with non-insulin dependent diabetes showed significant improvements in weight, cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin levels after a 3 week trial on a diet supplemented with Goji berry.

Pomegranates grow wild from Iran to northern India, but they are cultivated throughout India, the Middle East, southern Europe and California. Scientists in Israel have been conducting research on the health benefits of pomegranates and pomegranate juice for years, and now others have joined in. Researchers report that they are rich in antioxidants that can keep bad LDL cholesterol from oxidizing (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, May 2000). This degradation of LDL seems to be an initial step in the development of atherosclerosis. In addition, pomegranate juice, like aspirin, can help keep blood platelets from clumping together to form unwanted clots.

In a study on Green Tea Extract reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was found that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a measure of metabolism), plus also had a significant effect on fat oxidation. The researchers indicated that their findings have substantial implications for weight control. A 4% overall increase in 24-hour energy expenditure was attributed to the green tea extract, however, the research found that the extra expenditure took place during the daytime. This led them to conclude that, since thermogenesis (the body’s own rate of burning calories) contributes 8-10% of daily energy expenditure in a typical subject, that this 4% overall increase in energy expenditure due to the green tea actually translated to a 35-43% increase in daytime thermogenesis.
