Maintaining An Active Metabolism For Lifelong Weight Maintenance
An active metabolism is one of the keys to staying slim and maintaining your weight, as well as burning fat. With it you can eat more food without gaining weight and burn more calories while at rest. As kids, we all had it, but as we grow older it starts to slow down.
However by practicing the following three simple activities, you can maintain an energetic metabolism as you age. Keep in mind that anything that you do that helps you to burn more calories, also helps you to maintain an active metabolism.
Keeping Your Metabolism Active
Build Lean Muscle The loss of lean muscle is probably the greatest contributing factor of the slowing of your metabolism. As you grow older you lose muscle. And because muscle burns more calories than fat cells, you lose a built-in fat burner when this lean mass starts to waste away.
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to lose muscle mass as you grow older. By performing resistance exercise you can not only preserve your muscle mass, but you can also build lean muscles as well, and with this an active metabolism.
Eat several small meals each day Your digestive system is just like any other system that requires energy. The more you use it, the more energy that it will burn. By eating several small meals a day, you force your body to burn energy to digest the food.
During this process your body temperature slightly rises and energy from fat cells are used to digest your foods, both of which burn calories. This entire process contributes to maintaining an active metabolism and helping you to stay lean and burn off fat.
Perform Vigorous Exercise The harder you exercise, the more you demand of your body. Over time your body adapts and is better able to sustain these exercise sessions for longer periods of time. This is because your heart stroke volume or the quantity of blood ejected with each stroke increases.
This increased capacity you now have requires your body to use more energy, thus increasing your metabolism. And better still, this also means that you are not just burning more calories while you exercise, but while you are at rest.
