Fiber is simply the parts of plant foods that your body can’t digest or absorb, and because of this, it does not add calories to your diet. It is able to suppress your diet, because when water is added to it, it increases in volume, which gives you the sensation of feeling fuller.

There a two types of fiber: insoluble and soluble. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and in addition of not adding calories to your diet, it helps to promotes the movement of matter through your digestive system and adds bulk to your stool. This is beneficial in preventing constipation.

Sources for this fiber include whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts and many types of vegetables.

Soluble fiber, on the other hand, dissolves in water. When this happens, the substance expands in volume, which makes you feel fuller quicker, thereby suppressing your appetite. In addition to this, it also helps to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels.

Sources for this fiber type are oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, barley and psyllium. In fact you can buy psyllium in supplement form. It is typically marketed as a colon cleanser, but can be taken to add more bulk to your diet to suppress your appetite.

Just don’t plan on having a diet consisting only of this substance. Even though it is highly beneficial, it does not supply any nutritional nourishment to your body, which means you still need nutrients from other foods.

However, this should not be a problem if you get your fiber from whole foods as oppose to just supplements. Furthermore, you need to drink water to insure that the substance does not become hard and difficult to remove from your body. When this happens, the worse case scenario is bowel impact, which is a very unpleasant feeling, as well as very dangerous. But if you drink the recommended supply of water, this should never be a problem.

In short, to control your appetite without having to add chemicals to your diet, eat more fiber rich foods. With this natural appetite suppressant, your stomach will fill fuller and as a result you will be better able to stay on your diet and lose those unsightly inches.
