Weight Loss and NLP – It’s All in Your Mind

Let’s face it. Losing weight is hard for most of you guys. You could even say that it’s similar to being in sales and having to make call calls. Cold calls aren’t pleasant for most people, but those who are successful in this type of sales environment are the ones who make themselves do what they don’t want to do. The same can be said of weight loss. Weight loss isn’t necessarily pleasant, but those who lose weight are the ones who do what they don’t want to do. But what if you could make yourself like losing weight.

Sounds impossible, but that is the promise of NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. The practice of NLP concerns itself with how you mental programing is reflected in your language and language patterns. It also deals with how you mentally map the world around you. Practitioners in this field claim to be able to not only help you lose weight with techniques stemming from NLP, but they also claim to be able to solve phobias too.

Skeptical? Good. But before you totally blow it off, try this little experiment. Close your eyes and picture your favorite food like chocolate, ice cream or my personal favorite, cheesecake– whatever makes your mouth water. Now notice the characteristics of it in your mind. Is it near or far, bright or dark, to the left, right, up, or down? Now do the same thing with a food you dislike, maybe broccoli or squash, anything that turns your stomach.

Okay, here’s the fun part. Take the food you dislike and place it in the same place in your mind as the food you love. If you’re like most people, you either can’t or at least find it very unsettling. You may be surprised, but it’s nothing mystical about what you just did. It’s just one way your mind operates that you probably never noticed before.

By using techniques like this, gurus like Tony Robbins and Chris Howard have helped people to lose weight and make other positive changes in their lives. So if you’re one of those who thought they had tried everything to lose weight, maybe techniques from NLP is what you need to change your perspective about weight loss.
