New Research Suggest Vinegar May Naturally Fight Body Fat
Toss away the salad dressing and start dashing on the vinegar. A study, performed by researchers in Japan, reports that there is new evidence that vinegar can help to prevent accumulation of body fat and weight gain.
Vinegar, as noted by Tomoo Kondo and his colleagues, has been used as a folk medicine since ancient times on a wide range of ills. Modern scientific research suggests that acetic acid, which is the main component of vinegar, may be the source of its remarkable benefits. Besides helping to control fat accumulation, it may also help to control blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
In their study, laboratory mice were fed a high-fat diet. Those that were given acetic acid developed significantly less body fat, in some cases up to 10% less, than other mice.
The results from this new research also adds evidence to the belief that acetic acid fights fat by turning on genes for fatty acid oxidation enzymes. In this process, the genes produce proteins that are involved in breaking down fats, which work to suppress the accumulation of body fat.
This is not the first reporting of the benefits of this common household item. Researchers from Lund University reported that by increasing the intake of vinegar, the substance could help dieters eat less, plus reduce cravings brought on by sugar peaks after meals.
To add it to your diet, many old-time proponents of using vinegar as a home remedy recommend taking a teaspoon mixed with water and a little honey, three times a day before each meal. You can drink it straight, but the taste would probably be too overwhelming.
