Beef Jerky – A Great Healthy Snack – Not a Junk Food

Working in an office environment, hunger between meals, while inevitable, can pose a number of problems. Generally, the vending machine offers the main source of food in the office outside of standard meal times and the contents of the vending machines are normally high in saturated fat and low on nutritional content.

The alternative is to be prepared and bring your snacks to work with you. What are you looking for in a snack? Food preparation can be time consuming, a reason why many people go throughout the day unprepared, with hunger driving them to convenience foods and undesirable high fat foods.

To maintain or promote weight loss, you want to keep your blood sugar level relatively constant throughout the day. A large injection of carbohydrates will cause a blood sugar spike, promoting insulin release and subsequent fat storage.

There is a growing body of evidence that a high protein diet can help burn body fat. If you are taking part in a calorie restricted eating plan, and/or in strength and conditioning program, you are best advised to consume a higher quantity of protein to prevent muscle wastage.

Prolonged low calorie intake, or excessive cardiovascular exercise can put the body into a starvation mode. The body will fight vigorously to hold on to its fat stores and turn to your muscle as a form of energy.

A good snack will be high in protein and low in fat and carbohydrates. Protein has a greater satiety (giving a greater feeling of fullness) than fats and carbohydrates. Protein has a lower energy density than fat and contains a lower amount of calories than an equal weight of a higher fat snack.

Beef Jerky, though many people may consider it junk food, offers a healthy and convenient snack which can be eaten anywhere. Jerky is high in protein, low in fat and carbohydrates. It is ready to eat as you buy it, it requires no preparation. Just rip open the packet and start eating. This is invaluable in the office environment where cooking and storage facilities may not be readily available.

I enjoy Beef Jerky because of its chewy texture, as well as being filling it takes some time to eat allowing you to snack more consciously adding to the feeling of fullness. Keeping a few packs of Jerky in your office drawer will give you a healthy snack alternative to the vending machine nightmare currently on offer.
