Benefits Of Whey Protein Nutrition

Protein nutrition is an important and beneficial part of any well balanced diet. However, being the busy person that you are, there are instances when you don’t have the time to prepare a healthy source of the nutrient. An excellent substitution for the on-the-go person to use instead is whey protein. This protein source occurs naturally and is found in foods consumed every day.

As for how it is produced, whey comes from the making of cheese. When making cheese, the watery part of the milk is separated out. It is from this part that we get the source of whey protein. Typically this part was discarded until it was recognized as a source rich in protein. Using this form of protein as a protein source has many benefits, some of which are listed below.

Benefits of Whey Protein

High Biological Value

Depending on the filtration process, whey protein can have a high biological value (BV) of 95% or more. This means that whatever the BV value, you can expect that much of the protein to be absorbed by your body. For instance, a BV value of 95% means that 95% of what is considered protein in the whey substance can be absorbed in your body.

Contains All 20 Amino Acids

Whey protein contains all 20 amino acids and is a good source of branch chained amino acids (BCAAs). BCAAs make up approximately a third of your skeletal muscle, and they play an important role in protein synthesis, which is very important for athletes and active individuals, as they are metabolized for energy in working muscle.

May Be Safe With Milk Allergies

If the whey has been hydrolyzed, then those individuals with milk allergies may be able to safely use this nutrient. This is because the allergenic native proteins have been removed.

Aids in Anabolism

As a post workout supplement, whey protein has been found to aid in anabolism of your muscle, that is the building up of muscle. After a strenuous workout, your muscle fibers breakdown. When you supplement with whey protein, this helps to repair and build more muscle fibers. In addition, because of its makeup, the nutrient is absorbed more quickly into your body.
