How Exercise Minimizes Weight Regain After Weight Loss

One of the greatest challenges with weight loss comes after you have lost your desired amount of weight. Many diet and health experts focus on how to lose weight, but few put the same amount of effort into teaching you how to keep it off. And given that many diets use extreme measures to get you to lose the weight, it shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise.

One method that has been proven to help keep the weight off is exercise. A study by the University of Colorado Denver reports that exercising helps to prevent weight regain by reducing your appetite, and by burning fat first before burning carbohydrates.

Researchers believe that by burning fat first and storing carbohydrates for use later in the day helps to slow weight regain and may minimize overeating by signaling a feeling of fullness to the brain. This choice of burning fat first was seen only in the group of rats that exercised after their weight loss. The sedentary group first fuel choice was carbohydrates.

The also found in their study that exercise prevented the increase in the number of fat cells that occurs during the regaining of weight. This result challenges the conventional wisdom that the number of fat cells is set and cannot be altered by dietary or lifestyle changes.

In the sedentary rats, a small number of presumably new, fat cells appeared early in the relapse process, which would not only accelerate the process of regaining weight, but also increase fat storage capacity in the abdomen. Exercising helped to prevent this from happening in the other group of rats.

Moreover, they state that these combined coordinated physiological changes in the brain and the body lower the ‘defended’ weight, that is, the weight that our physiology drives us to achieve, and suggest that the effects of exercise on these physiological processes may make it easier to stay on a diet.

The overall suggestion of the study is that regular exercise helps to attenuates the metabolic drive to regain weight after long term weight loss. So if exercising is not your cup of tea, you might want to change your tune if you want to have an easier time at keeping off the weight.
